Personal Reflection

The memory is still clear. The first day of school my kindergarten teacher went around the room asking us questions. When they asked us to tell them our parents’ names, I smiled and said, ‘Dear’ and ‘Darling’; because those are the only names I ever heard them call each other.

By the time I was in high school the names were different and they were on the edge of divorce. The memories of growing up in a home filled with conflict and tension are still very vivid. It is difficult to see two people so much in love grow apart and feel their disconnection and loss.

One of the greatest joys in my life is supporting and guiding couples as they make the shift from animosity to understanding and from conflict back to tender connection. A parallel interest and deep source of satisfaction is helping well intentioned parents be the best parents that they can be. The two are intertwined. Happy parents make healthy families.
